Tempered Glass

Tempered glass is safety glass that has been heat-treated to increase its strength to roughly four times that of standard annealed glass. If it breaks, it fractures into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, which is why it's specified wherever impact safety and code compliance matter — storefronts, curtain walls, glass railings, and entrance doors.

Laminated Glass

Laminated glass consists of two or more glass layers bonded together with an interlayer. Bullet Resistant Glass: What You Need to Know

Bullet resistant glass is a multilayer glazing product — typically laminated glass, polycarbonate, or a glass-clad polycarbonate composite — engineered to absorb and dissipate the energy of a ballistic impact without fully penetrating. It's rated under UL 752, the industry standard for bullet-resisting equipment, which defines eight distinct protection levels based on caliber, velocity, and number of shots.

UL 752 Level 1 through Level 8 covers a wide range of threats: Level 1 resists 9mm handgun rounds (three shots), Level 3 resists .44 Magnum, Level 5 resists 7.62mm rifle rounds, and Level 8 resists multiple shots (five) of 7.62mm rifle rounds. Thickness scales with protection level — Level 1 glazing typically starts around 3/4 inch, while the highest rifle-resistant levels can require 3 inches or more, along with reinforced framing to support the added weight.

It's worth noting that no glazing is truly "bulletproof" — the accurate term is bullet resistant, meaning the glazing is rated to withstand a specific caliber and shot count at a defined UL 752 level. Beyond that rated threshold, penetration is possible, which is why matching the level to your actual threat environment matters more than choosing the thickest option available.

Bullet resistant glazing is common in banks, schools, government buildings, healthcare facilities, and retail storefronts — anywhere forced-entry or ballistic protection is part of the security plan.
