Tempered glass is safety glass that has been heat-treated to increase its strength to roughly four times that of standard annealed glass. If it breaks, it fractures into small, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards, which is why it's specified wherever impact safety and code compliance matter — storefronts, curtain walls, glass railings, and entrance doors.
All fabrication — cutting to size, edge polishing, and hole drilling — has to happen before glass is tempered, since tempered glass cannot be cut or altered afterward. It's evaluated against specific ballistic threats under UL 752, the Standard for Bullet-Resisting Equipment.
The edition matters: UL 752's 11th edition uses Levels 1–10. Its 12th edition uses handgun (HG), rifle (RF), and shotgun (SG) designations, which are not a ranked protection scale.
